Guide to at home Newborn Photography in Birmingham
Why At Home Newborn Photography is perfect for your family
Becoming a parent is a life-changing experience, and those first few weeks with your newborn pass in the blink of an eye. You’ll want to hold onto those tiny fingers and sleepy smiles forever and having a photoshoot with your newborn baby is a lovely way to capture this magical time. There’s lots of choice when it comes to having a photoshoot with your new baby. I offer a natural approach, so I’ve put together this guide to at home newborn photography in Birmingham, to give you all the information you’ll need to decide if a newborn photoshoot in the comfort of your own home is for you.
Why have at home Newborn Photography in Birmingham
Choosing an at-home newborn photography session has some big advantages. Firstly, it’s comfortable. Your home is your sanctuary, and being in a familiar environment helps keep both you and your baby feel relaxed. There’s no need to pack bags with endless items, navigate traffic, or worry about if you’ve left something behind.
Plus, your home provides a personal backdrop. Whether it’s your baby’s nursery, your favourite cosy corner, or the family sofa, these spots make your photos more meaningful. I’ll be able to capture those everyday moments, like snuggling on the bed or cuddling in a feeding chair, that represent real life with a newborn. When you look back at these baby photos in years to come, they bring back memories of what it felt like, in your home, in these first few weeks.
How to prepare for an at home newborn photography session
Preparation doesn’t need to be stressful. You honestly don’t need to do a lot.
1. Start by tidying up the areas you’d like to use in the photos. This doesn’t mean a deep clean! Just declutter surfaces and ensure there’s good natural light coming in. Simply open blinds and curtains to let the light in.
2. Turn up the heating before I arrive, so that your baby stays cosy and warm, even if they’re undressed. A warm baby is a happy, sleepy baby, which means your session will be nice and relaxed.
3. Have your baby’s essentials ready. Nappies, wipes, muslin cloths and a dummy, if you’re using one. Textured blankets look great in photos, so if you have a special blanket that you’d like to include, just let me know and we can incorporate it into the shoot.
What to expect during your Birmingham at home newborn photography shoot
An at-home newborn shoot is a relaxed experience designed to fit around your baby’s needs. Sessions usually last 2-3 hours to allow time for feeding, changing, and comforting. I want the shoot to feel natural and unhurried. We can have a cup of tea and have a chat before we start, there’s no rush.
The focus will be on your baby and your family connection. Whether it’s the way your newborn curls up in your arms or has a feed, I want to capture these moments of togetherness.
My house isn’t suitable
Everyone’s house is suitable. It’s your home and sanctuary. Where you’ve made all those memories and that what makes it special. I can work in the tiniest of spaces, all I really need are you to cuddle your baby and some window light.
What should we wear?
Neutral, soft tones work beautifully for newborn photography. Think creams, beige/nudes and whites, greys, beige, or pastels. These colours keep the attention on your baby and create timeless photos. Avoid bold patterns or logos, as they can distract from your baby.
Try an coordinate a little, you don’t need to be too matchy matchy, but it looks lovely if you’ve picked a couple of colours from the same colour palette that work well together and give a cohesive look to your photos. Layers like cardigans or shawls can add texture and warmth to your photos. And most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in!
What should my Baby wear?
Neutral colours always look best for newborn babies. My advice is to keep it simple with a plain baby grow or vest. We can add any favourite blankets into the session and wrap your baby to keep them cosy if you’d like any photos with their skin showing.
Will you pose my baby?
No. I think your baby looks perfect as they are, without the need for elaborate poses. My newborn photography is very natural, so I will be photographing your baby either in your arms or on a blanket.
When should we have a newborn baby shoot?
The best time for a newborn session is within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy and can be easily posed for those curled-up, peaceful shots. However, if life feels too hectic in those early days, don’t worry. You can still have a beautiful session a little later, focusing on more alert and interactive moments with your baby.
When is the best time to book your Birmingham newborn photographer
Ideally, book your session during your second or early third trimester. This gives you plenty of time to choose the right photographer and reserve your date. Most photographers understand that due dates can shift, so they’ll work with you to adjust your booking once your baby arrives.
How much does an at home session with a Birmingham Newborn Photographer cost?
A newborn photography shoot at home costs £125, This includes up to 2 hours for the shoot and One 10×8 prints. After the shoot, photos are edited and you will receive a private online gallery, where you can browse your photos, in the comfort of your own home. You can decide without any pressure, if you’d like to buy prints, digital files or get something printed larger and framed for the wall
